Spark Learning
Young children, whose brains are developing rapidly, need
a steady diet of novel and stimulating experiences as well
as physical and verbal interactions with caring others. At
Habitot, young children encounter a rich learning environment,
designed for young hands and bodies. Habitot's multi-sensory
exhibits are the core of our educational programming for young
children. exhibit tour
Each of our permanent and rotating exhibits, from the Rocketship and Waterworks to Little Town Grocery & Cafe, allows children to set the pace and direction of their own learning. Habitot designs exhibit themes to engage hands-on manipulation and experimentation, exploration and discovery. The exhibits foster social play with other children as well as with parents and caregivers. children's hands-on

Art Studio for
Beginners
Our drop-in Art Studio is available to museum visitors every
day at no extra charge. The studio offers a changing variety
of open-ended art experiences including mural painting, clay
programs and mixed media opportunities. In our fee-based children's
art classes, which are conducted in spring and summer semesters,
young children are allowed to deepen their art exploration
with a wide diversity of new and recycled materials. Parent
education hand-outs in the Art Studio help parents appreciate
the benefits of open-ended art and how they can support their
child's creativity.

Early Childhood
Classes
Habitot's art programs are guided by professional educators
who understand the particular developmental stages of art
making in preschool-aged children. From scribbling to representational
art, Habitot's art programs emphasize the process of creation
rather than end products. Art experiences make a positive
impact on young children's growth and development. Regular
experiences with art help young children build hand and finger
motor skills, hand to eye coordination, abstract thinking
and symbolic understanding (all important preparation for
reading and writing); science concepts like form and shape,
the properties of matter, and color mixing; and they enhance
imagination, creativity, and self-expression. children's

Special Events
Celebrate Community
Throughout the year, Habitot celebrates seasonal and multicultural
events with live music and dance performances, theater, art
activities, and food that introduce young children to the
Bay Area's diverse community. Many of these events are offered
as Free Admission Days, to make the museum accessible to a
wide audience. Members of the community are invited to join
our Cultural Connections Advisory Board to help plan and implement
these events.

life and we want support hands-on learning in the home. Habitot
