"Play Around the Bay" Symposium is a Success
Habitot Children's Museum, along with the Alliance for Childhood and the East Bay Funders Network, welcomed over 90 play advocates and activists to the "Play Around the Bay" Symposium in Berkeley on January 26, 2008 (insert link to flier here). Speakers from around Bay shared information about innovative projects that are on-going or are under development in playgrounds, recreation centers, parks and housing projects that are helping to restore the experience of play for children
Experts including the American Academy of Pediatrics continue to raise alarms that today's children are not experiencing play at the levels needed for healthy development. Children's learning in schools has been affected, and Stuart Brown of the National Institute for Play commented at the Symposium that "the decline in health and well-being of children as seen in increased levels of illness, asthma, allergies, hyperactivity, obesity, mental illness, and a high incidence behavior-controlling medications for children are not unrelated to the fact that play is disappearing."
An outcome of the Symposium is the formation of a Bay Area Play Council, which will continue the dialog, advocate for increased funding for projects that promote play, and connect those working on children's play issues locally. To be involved in the Bay Area Play Council, please contact Habitot at 510-647-1111 x 35.
